About Udaipur

Udaipur, the 'City of Lakes' was the capital of the Mewar Kingdom and ruled by the Sisodia Dynasty for about 1200 years. Maharana Udai Singh established the city of Udaipur in 1567 AD overlooking the Lake Pichola on the advise of a hermit.

Holiday in Udaipur begins with the visit to the City Palace. Built in 1567 AD, the palace is perched on a hillock on the banks of Lake Pichola. The noteworthy buildings within the palace are Tripolia Gate, Rai Angaan or the Royal Courtyard and the Mor Chowk or the Peacock Courtyard. Visit the Jagdish Temple built by Maharana Jagat Singh I 651 AD. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple has a splendid 79 ft high pagoda carved with the sculptures of dancers, musicians, elephants and horsemen.

Lake Pichola is the famous lake of Udaipur. Enjoy a boat ride in the lake on holiday in Udaipur. The lake looks beautiful surrounded on all the sides by the hills, palaces, temples, bathing ghats and embankments. Do visit the Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir, the two island palaces on the lake.

A beautiful garden to visit on holiday in Udaipur is Sahelion ki Bari. It was built by Maharana Sangram Singh for his daughter and the ladies of the Queen's court in order to provide the pleasure of the monsoon to his daughter who had been ill for a long period. The garden is beautified with different fountains and four pools decorated with well-defined pavilions and elephants. The fountains still work on the unique hydraulic technique devised in 1700 AD.

The other places to visit on holiday in Udaipur are Grand Durbar Hall, Sajjan Garh, Fateh Sagar Lake, Shilpagram-Craftsmen Village and Ahar-a prehistoric archaeological site.
